1000 Welcome! Since the Player List is currently empty, perhaps you are a new user. Let's take a moment for a quick overview...\n\nOnTarget is a cute and addictive 2D graphics game that has been called 'the perfect 5-minute break'. Opposing artillery pieces shoot it out under a star-filled moonlit night sky\n\nOnTarget offers just the right balance of fun and education, simplicity and challenge, relaxation and mental stimulation for the child in all of us.\n\nYou can play against a fellow warrior, a skill-adjustable computer opponent, or against yourself (a popular option, amazingly).\n\nThe twinkling stars, the lightning storms, and the ever-dwindling moon provide a natural ambiance that adds to the fun of the game.\n\nOh, and by the way-- if you commit suicide, the computer has a few choice sarcastic comments to share with you!
1100 The `Player List' screen is the `lobby' of the program.\n\nIf the Player List is empty, you must first add players to the list.\n\nThen, you can select any two players (or one player vs. your computer) to play a set of 10 rounds.\n\nOnce two players are selected, OnTarget immediately starts a game.\n\nNew players initially are ranked last in the list with no playing history.\n\nAs you accumulate battlefield experience, your ranking among the other players is constantly re-calculated. The better you play, the higher your standing in the Player List. Are you good enough to be No. 1?
1200 A game consists of a set of 10 rounds.\n\nIn each round, a unique battlefield is generated. Each player shoots at the other. When it's your turn, you should adjust the speed and angle settings of your artillery piece according to the battlefield conditions, your previous shot, your gut feeling, your lucky number, your mother's birthdate, and any other factors you want to consider.\n\nThe round continues until a player's position is either destroyed or abandoned. A `Round Summary' is displayed, and the next round begins.\n\nAt the end of 10 rounds, a `Set Summary' is displayed with the winner. You are then returned to the Player List to start another game, if you wish, or quit.\n\nOptions are available during the game to adjust the game speed setting (see `Game Tips' for important information regarding game speed), to turn the sound on or off, to have the flight trajectories remain on the screen, and whether or not to display the lightning.\n\nA game can be abandoned at any time during the set, but all accumulated data for that set will be lost, and players will not be re-ranked.
1300 Strategy\n--------------------------------------------------------------\nGames are played in sets of 10 rounds. At the beginning of each round, each artillery piece is supported with 100 men. As each artillery piece is fired, a small random number of men abandon their position. This has two important implications:\n\nFirst, you need to destroy your opponent before your position is abandoned; if you don't, you'll lose that round. Second, the sooner you destroy an opponent, the more credit you receive for your opponent's remaining men. So it's in your best interests to destroy your opponent's position as soon as you can.\n\nAt the end of 10 rounds, OnTarget ends the game and calculates the winner based on rounds won and total number of enemy killed.\n\nIf you're playing a registered version of OnTarget, your standing among the other players in the 'Player List' is re-calculated.\n\nSpeed and Angle Adjustments\n--------------------------------------------------------------\nUse the angle setting to get up and over the terrain, and to make large horizontal adjustments.\n\nUse the speed setting to make small horizontal adjustments.\n\nIt may appear that you've hit your opponent's position dead on, but it didn't explode. You haven't quite hit it dead center. Change the speed adjustment one or two clicks and try again.\n\nGame Speed setting\n--------------------------------------------------------------\nOnTarget originally defaults to a game speed setting of 50. However, there is so much variation in processing power among differing computer systems that you will probably want to adjust the game speed setting to your particular computer.\n\nAs you play, adjust the game speed setting that displays the most natural appearing speed when you shoot your artillery piece.\n\nAdding your Computer to your Player List\n--------------------------------------------------------------\nIf you want OnTarget to keep track of your Computer's performance as a player, add the name `Computer' to the Player List.
1400 If you have a registered version of OnTarget, your playing performance is re-evaluated every time you complete a set of 10 rounds.\n\nUsing a weighing formula that considers your average score and your ratio of sets played/sets won, OnTarget ranks you according to your performance compared to the other players, and re-sorts the Player List accordingly.\n\nThe higher your performance, the higher your listing. Are you at the top of the list?\n\nAs mentioned in the `Playing Tips' section, if you add your computer to the Player List, OnTarget will evaluate its performance just as it would anyone else's performance (if you can live with the possibility that it might be ranked higher than some other players!).
